2020 has been a bit of a blur for most of us… and we are already approaching the half way mark of 2021…
The pandemic has resulted in a lot more time at home (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing), but it has also given us an opportunity to reasses our lifestyle, wellbeing and surroundings.
With the covid dust somewhat settling, it is clear that some things may not return to the way they were. Residential design has always adapted in times of significant changes, to meet the demands of the moment. Here are our insights on the top 6 building design trends for 2021.
1. Storage and Clutter Reduction
Mudrooms are increasingly popular and being incorporated into most family home designs.
Common preference is to position the mudroom adjacent the garage or point of entry.
Storage, clutter reduction & simplifying the everyday hustle, is the name of the game.
2. Multi-Purpose + Seperated Quite Spaces
Open plan is great, but Covid has reinforced the need for solitude and separated quite spaces.
Demand for multi-purpose spaces has increased – for entertaining, learning and relaxation.
Kids retreats and living options for extended family is a nice-to-have.
3. Kitchen is King
The kitchen continues to dominate as a feature of the home and focal point for social gatherings.
Servery windows are a great way to enable the cooking experience to migrate outside.
Butler’s pantries continue to be a popular design inclusion.
4. Meaningful Connection to the Outdoors
A meaningful connection to the outdoors, including views, natural light, organic ventilation and seamless transition is high on the priority list.
Expansive glazing and sunlight exposure is a typical design preference, with an increase in skylights and splash back windows.
5. Peace & Quite
Acoustic considerations are growing in importance, with an increase in working from home.
A single study may no longer be enough for some families, especially during those Zoom calls.
6. Bringing Back the Backyard
Firepits, integrated bbq + outdoor kitchen and covered sitting areas are very popular.
Covid has shifted our thinking towards outdoor spaces, with backyards starting to grow rather than shrink.
